I have been watching the autumn colour reports. It’s called “koyo” a celebration alongside Cherry Blossom in May. I have come to Takayama in the province of Gifu. As the slow train followed the river up the valley I could see the trees turning. You can imagine my delight when I arrived here. It’s much cooler up here. My home for a few days is a traditional house attached to a bathhouse. So squeaky clean sketching today. I did wonder why everybody had bells in the woods, ah that would be the Bears.
Kagoshima Ohara Festival. I seem to have picked a good spot with my pin. Not only a smoking mountain but the biggest festival in Kyushu. The Ohara folk dance parade, 22,000 dancers 660,000 visitors one evening and one day. The Main Street cordoned off 6 lanes inc trams, as a loop of rainbow colours parade, proud to represent their groups, together.
Enough colours and sounds to inspire 50 paintings! ……where’s my canvas and palette knife….oooooh those colour combinations. This one is for Jill B.
Hikari kindly asked me to her home in Nara, an old town, to meet her family. She took me to visit the Temples and Shrines. It is popular for the many deer roaming. We had a tea ceremony by the Temple where they hold a Fire Ceremony. Families take their children to the Shrine aged 3 & 5 for boys, girls 3 & 7, to give thanks and pray for their future. Lunch was at a traditional tatami (mats) restaurant. Exquisite green rice soup, sashimi, smoked fish, pickles and jellies. The sushi was wrapped in a persimmon leaf. The fruit is ready now like our apples.
Okayama exploring. There is nothing like finding new ground. I just pick a place on the map, supplies of pastries with red bean and sweet bread with salmon and go walking. Spent the day by the River Asahi. Fish a metre long and plenty of them sitting in the current. The birds were fishing cormorant egret heron and a black kite but it had no forked tail. Sketching and notes made. As inspirational and reflective days go this one moved me to tears.
Moving & shaking..
