High Spirit

I felt the need to walk in the mountains. The ones in the Southern Alps, Honshu, are for climbers this time of year and unless there are made tracks, the mountain forests are impenetrable. So I find a local rail map and head out to Mt. Hiei on Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. That’s northeast of Kyoto. No OS map on this one, look at the contours. Volcanic vertical and revine.

From Hieizan Sakamoto I walk to the cable car. Mist added to the atmosphere. I could walk freely at the top for hours and visit the sacred Buddhist temples. Founded 788 Tendai sect. Mission accomplished. Celebrated with a “good luck” beer.
